80 street lamps to be installed in Teluk Bahang

TELUK Bahang is set to be safer and brighter under the state government’s initiative to install more street lamps there.

The Penang Municipal Council is installing some 80 street lamps from Teluk Bahang all the way to Sungai Pinang in George Town.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said about half had already been put up.

“We want the state to be brighter so that it will be safer.

“This is just one of the many projects we have initiated to benefit the rakyat here,” he said.

He was speaking after a walkabout at the Teluk Bahang market recently.

He added that the state would ensure that Teluk Bahang stay a ‘green oasis’ while turning it into an education hub of excellence.

He also said that the Escape Theme Park Resort project had provided lots of job opportunities for the locals.

The resort, located on a 17ha site near the Teluk Bahang forest reserve, is being developed by Sim Leisure Consultant Sdn Bhd.

The project, which started on Oct 18 last year, will take about six years to complete.

State Speaker Datuk Abdul Halim Hussein, who was also present, said that since 2008, the tourism sector had been thriving again in Teluk Bahang.

“Over 80% of the locals rely on the tourism sector to earn a living and prior to 2008, many hotels here had closed down and people were left jobless.

“Now things are different with both local and foreign tourists flocking here, especially on weekends,” he said.

Lim later presented goodwill payments to single mothers, senior citizens and top students from the Teluk Bahang constituency.
