KUANTAN: Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) researchers won four gold medals at the Invention & New Product Exposition (INPEX) held in the United States recently.
Two of the grand prizes were contributed by the Chemical Engineering and Natural Resources Faculty, which came up with an anti-aging cream made from chicken feathers.
The research led by Dr Arun Gupta centred on stimulating skin cells renewal through keratin protein extracted from chicken feathers with high amino acids.
“It can boost the growth of collagen and elasticity to make wrinkles disappear slowly. Most anti-aging cream products from overseas are madeusing sheep wool extracts as it is readily available there,” he said.
Dr Arun added that the percentage of chicken farming in Malaysia were much higher so feathers could be easily procured here and cheaply too.
His victory in the Chemical as well as the Personal Care Product categories was shared with Professor Datuk Dr Rosli Mohd Yunus and Siti Nur Khairulnisa.
The expo held at the Monroeville Convention Centre in Pittsburgh also saw UMP winning a gold medal through the research of Dr Jolius Gimbun with researchers Chitra Charan Suri, Shahid Ali Wafa Muhammad and Dr Said Nurdin titled Chemically Treated Limestone Based Catalyst for Biodiesel Production.
The fourth medal was won by Civil Engineering and Earth Resources researcher Associate Professor Dr Zularisam Abdul Wahid with the assistance of Abdul Syukor Abd Razak.
INPEX is the largest invention trade show in the United States, showcasingall manner of inventions, new products and innovations.
