THE top two contenders, Sungai Buloh Photo and Wizs Y Sports faced untroubled stints as they went on to complete their league fixtures in the final week of the third edition of the Modesliga badminton league at the Suria Sports badminton centre in Subang Jaya recently.
Both teams came through and scored convincing 5-0 victories over their respective opponents.
League leader Sungai Buloh Photo then edged their closest challenger Wizs Y Sports, emerging as the champion with a comfortable six-match advantage.
Sungai Buloh Photo collected a total of 60 points based on matches won and lost over 16 ties in the series.
Going into the final tie comprising five matches including a mixed doubles and four men’s doubles, Sungai Buloh Photo needed to pick up three matches against the lower ranked MyTeam 3.0 to protect their position at the top of the standings.
MyTeam 3.0 made it easier for Sungai Buloh Photo as they gave a walkover in the fourth men’s doubles and final match of the tie.
The veteran men’s doubles partnership of Siew Yoke Hee-Ng Sun Ly got Sungai Buloh Photo off to an impressive when the duo tamed MyTeam 3.0’s Chan Kai Meng-Lee Wei Thung 21-13, 21-12.
And Sungai Buloh Photo’s mixed doubles combination of Yap Harn Xin-Yong Jun Wei continued to stamp their mark and delivered the winning point for an unassailable lead in securing the league title with a straightforward 21-6, 21-11 win over Low Fong Fong-Teoh Eng Keong of MyTeam 3.0.
Sungai Buloh Photo captain Lee Choon Foh teamed up with former national shuttler Lee Tsuen Seng and prevailed 21-12, 21-18 over Yong Soon Kiat-Chan Jin Hoe from MyTeam 3.0.
The pair of Fuan Keen Vai-Choong Zhen Wei concluded Sungai Buloh Photo’s campaign in style when they did not allow Chia Min Xuan-Yang See Lim of MyTeam 3.0 to get into their rhythm and wrapped up the tie with a 21-10, 21-9 win.
Although they did not set a lofty target in bagging the league, Choon Foh said they were delighted with their team effort in staying at the top of the league table from start to finish and accomplished a victorious outing in their first appearance under the Sungai Buloh Photo banner.
“Even with a key player and notable name Lee Tsuen Seng in our team, we did not rate ourselves highly because we were up against several serious contenders with a balanced line-up. We fielded a side with the intention to be part of the occasion and join the fun.
“We acquired the services of players from the previous league runners-up Fastrax team for the recent league. Fastrax were also the winners of the Xtreme social badminton league last year. It was a keenly contested league and went down to Wizs Y Sports and Assassins with identical 2-3 scores,” he added.
Meanwhile, Wizs Y Sports also received a walkover in match when SSHBC did not field a pair in the third men’s doubles for Wizs Y Sports to earn a comfortable 5-0 win and settled for second in the overall standings with 54 points.
Assasins came in third with 50 points ahead of Active-Strokes in fourth (48 points) while Juara were fifth (42 points).
Salute United (26 points), SSHBC (22 points), Thunder Killer (10 points) and Leisure (five points) were the mid-table entries.
Among the bottom of the table sides were Zeal Fusion, MyTeam 3.0, Zeal Relax, M7, Cheras Alliance Team, BASC All Stars.
The recent league drew a total of 17 teams but two teams did not go the full distance and withdrew from the competition.
The organisers are planning to host the next league with 10 teams each in two divisions starting either in September or October.
