LIFE has taken a turn for the better for accident victim Michael Sauri, when he was carried up to a newly-refurbished flat in Taman Desaria, PJS 5, where his wife and children were waiting with well-wishers from Persatuan Kebajikan Kasih (PKK).
Sauri and his family’s plight was highlighted in StarMetro on March 5 (“Family needs a home”), where he, his wife and children lived separately and needed funds to settle the payment for the flat.
According to PKK president Peter A. Dass, RM38,850 was raised by PKK members and the IJM Sports Club, as well as from anonymous and public donations after the article was published.
“Most of the funds went towards settling the balance on the flat payment and maintenance. We also had to get workers to come and renovate the house as it was being used as a den by addicts and the place was vandalised,” said Dass.
Additionally, PKK also got the family some basic furniture and provisions. Association member Victor Roche said they would be bringing up a hospital bed later, to make it easier for Sauri’s wife, A. Letchumi to take care of him.
“We will still be helping them in small ways, such as with the maintenance and some provisions from time to time,” he added.
Devindran Michael, 19, who is studying IT engineering at a local college right now, said he and his siblings were happy their father was back and that they could live together under one roof now.
“My mother is going to take up part-time work as a babysitter so that she can concentrate on looking after my father,” said Devindran.
Letchumi said since the accident, she had been taking part-time jobs as well as receiving welfare support from the government and donations from their church.
“I’ll probably wait till at least Devindran has graduated, then go back to full-time work. But at least baby-sitting will allow me to take care of Michael,” said Letchumi.
Dass said PKK was still getting enquiries about helping Sauri but that the main objective of the donation drive had been reached.
“With the public and StarMetro’s help, we have managed to get the house for the family, and I would like to thank the donors, including the anonymous ones, and StarMetro for helping us raise the funds for the project,” he said.
