Student gets his break

PENANG Methodist Boys’ School student Sampson Chew, whose breakdance performance captivated the hearts of judges, was declared champion of the Mr Sunway Carnival Model Search 2012.

The 19-year-old Lower Six student from Penang, who chose to dance during a talent segment in the final, showed an excellent performance which led to him taking the overall winner’s position.

Chew said he could not believe that he would win as he only aimed for the first runner-up position.

“I previously won smaller prizes for being in the top nine of a model search held at Queensbay Mall in 2010 and 2011.

“Now I have made it as champion, it has given me confidence to participate in more similar upcoming events,” he said after the event at Sunway Carnival Mall Seberang Jaya on Sunday.

Chew, who also won the Best Talent Award, walked away with RM1,500, a modelling contract with Amber Chia Academy, Korean Beauty Square (KBS) products, IBG products worth RM3,000, a City Chain watch worth RM1,099, Studio cash voucher worth RM500 and Sakae Sushi cash voucher worth RM200.

Penang Tar College student Hong Su Ken, 20, won the second position after he exhibited his talent in singing a song while playing his guitar.

“I am very surprised to be first-runner up, as this was my first time participating in such an event,” he added.

The diploma student in marketing from Alor Setar, Kedah, also won the KBS Complexion Award, the Most Photogenic Award and the Best Glamour Award and took home RM1,000, Korean Beauty Square products, a year of free membership with Absolute Fitness, IBG products voucher worth RM2,000, a City Chain watch worth RM779, Studio cash voucher worth RM300 and Sakae Sushi cash voucher worth RM150.

Full-time photographer Muhd Daniel Halis, 23, from Sungai Petani, Kedah, walked away with the third prize after he sang the oldie One Way Ticket.

Muhd Daniel said he was very excited to be named the second runner-up as he was also a first timer in such events.

He received RM500, Korean Beauty Square products, IBG products worth RM1,000, a City Chain watch worth RM599, Studio cash voucher worth RM200 and Sakae Sushi voucher worth RM100.

Pua Wooi Chin, 23, a student from Selangor, bagged the Mr Popularity award while Reuben Singh, 20, a student from Pe- nang, received the Best Runway award.

Forty hopefuls had auditioned for the annual competition on March 24 and 25. From there, 26 contestants qualified from a preliminary round on April 7 and April 17 made it into the finals.
