MIRI: A divorcee and her five-year-old child, who suffers from congenital heart defect (hole-in-heart), are in desperate need of help with expensive medication fees and rising living cost.

Hallimahton Sayadiah Saadi, 32, is a teacher with a secondary school here, but life has been tough since her husband left five years ago.

Besides having to fend for her son, Abdul Hakim Safi, who is unable to respond to his surroundings, Hallimahton has to also provide for her 85-year-old mother and elder sister.

She said she had tried since 2008, to apply for financial aid from the Social Welfare Department, but every time her application was rejected.

Her broken marriage, her son’s condition and the responsibility of looking after a family all on her own are eating up all her salary, and this is causing her many sleepless nights with serious emotional stress.

Yesterday, however, Halli–mahton’s plight got the attention of Datuk Sebastian Ting, the political secretary to Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin.

Ting visited the family bringing along with him two wheelchairs -one for the elderly mother and the other for Abdul Hakim.

The wheelchairs were donated by the minister and the Government.

“We (Government) will try our best to help the family. I will talk to the Social Welfare Department to see how they can help the family. We must not ignore their suffering,” said Ting said.
