SIBU: Dr John Tang Ing Ching has been elected as the new Sarawak Family Planning Association (SFPA), Sibu Branch chairman.
He will serve for the term 2012-2013. Former chairman Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck is now its honorary adviser.
The election of the new committee was held at its annual general meeting recently.
The vice-chairman post is held by Datin Judy Lau Kung Ee, the honorary secretary is Lily Lim Hui Ee while the honorary treasurer is Wong Duan Ding.
The committee members are Elizabeth Ann Fraude, Cheng Kwang Li, Jennie Rabbu, Sia Kiew Ling, Thomas Wong and Jamali Yew Abdullah.
Dr Soon said Sibu SFPA needed more young leaders and members who could bring in new ideas.
“In Sarawak, SFPA used to be the only NGO providing family planning services. But nowadays, the government’s Maternal and Child Health Clinics, Nur Sejatera Clinic are also providing the same services to the public, and without any charges.”
He said Sibu SFPA was set up in 1964.
Its aims, among others, are to advocate, promote and provide contraceptive services so that couples could plan the timing of births and size of their families.
This was, however, not to limit the number of children couples wished to have.
“SFPA also provided services related to the women’s repro- ductive health like breast exa- mination and cervical cancer screening for the early detection of breast and cervical cancer. Many lives were saved through these screenings since 1964,” Dr Soon said.
He told the meeting that he was elected vice-chairman in 1974 and was its chairman from 1976.
“With such a long period, it is thus time for me to retire and let the younger generation take over.”
He thanked members and staff for their hard work and co-operation when he was in office.
Dr Soon also thanked the SFPA Council for its assistance and support.
