Petaling bag three golds to win overall title in Sukses badminton meet

IT WAS a proud moment for Zainah Karim when she steered Petaling to the overall title in the Selangor Games (Sukses) badminton championships at the Datuk Sidek Hall in Kampong Attap, Selangor recently.

In the five-day championships, Petaling won three gold medals and finished as the overall champions for the ninth season.

It was an achievement for Zainah as she has been the team manager for Petaling from the first Sukses.

Zainah had reasons to celebrate and praised the players for giving their best in the competition.

“The competition has become tough compared to the first Sukses. The players from other districts are also doing well. That is good for the sport. But for me, it is something personal and I am happy to be part of the team,” said Zainah.

Petaling’s first gold medal came in the team event when they defeated Hulu Langat 3-0.

The second gold was in the women’s singles. It was a Petaling affair as both the finalists — M. Bhirentha and M. Thinaah — were from the same district.

The match was an interesting one but Bhirentha notched a 21-23, 21-19, 21-15 win over Thinaah to claim the gold medal.

However, Thinaah also won a gold medal when she partnered Teoh Mei Xing and defeated Hulu Langat’s Crysvia Lim Peiy Zhean– Payee Lim Peiy Yee 21-19, 21-19 in the women’s doubles.

Hulu Langat won two golds. The first was through Shahrul Shazwan Shahrin in the men’s singles.

The youngster upstaged Klang’s Lim Zhan Lee 21-11, 21-16 in the final.

Hulu Langat’s second gold came in the men’s doubles through Chua Khek Wei–Woon Mun Chun. The duo were involved in an exciting battle with Hulu Selangor’s Woo Zhan Jun–Ai Wei Jian before winning 22-20, 18-21, 21-18.

Mohd Khairil Hafiz and Nor Dalila Diana Khauruddin won Sabak Bernam’s only gold medal when they defeated Petaling’s Choong Yee Han–Siti Nabihah Abdul Rahman 21-13, 18-21, 22-20 in the mixed doubles.

The competition was organised by the Selangor Badminton Association (SBA) and the Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS). SBA president V. Subramaniam said the competition was a platform for them to identify players for the Malaysia Games.

“Most of the players are currently in our training programmes. But we also had the opportunity to spot some promising players. We will invite them to join our training programme.

“A ranking system will be initiated and the best players will be selected to represent Selangor in the Malaysia Games,” said Subramaniam.
