GEORGE TOWN: Seventeen guest relation officers (GROs) from China believed to be involved in vice were detained in an operation in the George Town inner city.
State CID chief Senior Asst Comm Zahruddin Abdullah said the GROs, all in their 20s, were rounded up at a nightspot on Jalan Seang Teik.
“We have also detained a 32-year-old man said to be the nightspot caretaker. All of them have since been remanded,” he said.
“The one-hour swoop condenamed Ops Noda, which started at 8.30pm on Thurs- day, involved more than 20 police person- nel,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.
On another matter, SAC Zahruddin said police have detained ten men who allegedly killed an odd-job worker at the Jalan P. Patto-Taman Tanjung junction in Butterworth.
It was reported that M. Jegathiswaran, 25, died after being attacked by a group of 15 men armed with rods and crash helmets at about 4.30am on Dec 4.
“The suspects aged between 16 and 71 have been remanded until Dec 14. Five more suspects are still at large,” he added.
Meanwhile, police are looking for a Myanmar national, Bashah, 32, who has a dark complexion, to help in investigations into a murder case in Taman Sri Relau, Bayan Lepas, last Tuesday.
