AMIRUL Hakimi Yusrizah won the boys Under-15 singles title for the second year running in the Kedah-Yonex odd-years age-group badminton championships.
Amirul, representing Mergong Recreation Club won the title by defeating Andrew Liw of Kuala Muda BA in three hard-fought games in the final this year, played at the Kedah BA hall on Saturday ().
He took 50 minutes to subdue Andrew by 21-12, 18-21 and 21-18 to emerge as champion for the second successive year.
Last year Amirul beat V. Jeeva in the final.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Amirul came back from a game down to overcome Bolriffin Khairul 12-21, 21-9, 21-14.
The match lasted 40 minutes.
Amirul, who had combined with Bolriffin Khairul to land the doubles title last year broke up their partnership this year only to find themselves ending up empty handed this time around.
Amirul partnered Mohd Rizal Ruslan while Bolriffin Khairul joined forces with Boay Choon How.
Amirul and Rizal beat Bolriffin and Boay in the quarter-finals before de-feating Tan Hong Chern-Teoh Leong Lynn in the semi-finals (21-17, 21-14) but the duo went down to third seeds Low Guan Liang and Rickson Tan in the final.
In the boys Under-13 final, Mohd Syauqi Fauzi beat Faiz Rozain, both members of the Kedah BA training squad, by 21-16, 13-21, 21-7 to secure his maiden title.
Mohd Syauqi and Faiz teamed up to win the doubles title by beating Irfanshah Salim and Mohd Zaid Khirodin with a score of 21-13, 21-13 in the final.
In the girls section, Pearly Tan Koong Le became the first player to win the Under-11 badminton title for three consecutive years in a row.
Pearly, a student of SRJK Keat Hwa, Alor Setar, had won the Under-11 girls singles title for the first time as an eight-year-old player in 2009 and captured it again in 2010.
She was in her element to land the singles title for the third time in as many outings, beating Lim Mei Chen 21-10, 21-17 in the final.
She made it a memorable night by capturing the girls Under-13 doubles title with Lim Hui Hui as her partner.
In the girls Under-15 event, top seeded Natalie Wong Yee Tong of Kuala Muda BA dug deep into her resources to overcome second seed Noor Hazwani Hazair in three games 21-13, 17-21, 21-13.
Earlier in the semi-finals Noor Hazwani avenged her defeat to Tan Jun Yi in last year’s Under-13 final by beating Jun Yi in straight games 21-12, 21-19 in this year’s Under-15 semi-finals.
Natalie Wong had earlier over-powered Lee Vie Na by 21-3, 21-8.
