KUALA TERENGGANU: The gamelan ensemble from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) emerged champion in the 2011 National Malay Gamelan Competition held at the university here recently.
The group, comprising 17 Terengganu-born students, called KONGA UniSZA, was victorious in both the Malay traditional and contemporary/creative categories.
Led by Sahar Sa’di Hashim, 43, the group performed a combination of Terengganu folk songs called Our Terengganu Legacy.
In the Malay traditional gamelan category, the Gamelan Asuhan Seni 1 group of Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur was crowned champion.
The group, represented by 10 students of International Islamic University Malaysia, wooed the jury with its renditions of Timang Burung and Tak Jangka Terang.
The two-day competition drew the participation of 17 gamelan groups comprising 250 musicians from throughout the countr.
Prizes were presented by the State Tourism, Art, Culture and Heritage committee chairman, Datuk Abdul Rahin Mohd Said.
The champion for each category received a cash prize of RM10,000. There was also a jury’s special award of RM5,000. The best musician received RM1,000 while a consolation prize of RM3,000 was awarded to each participating team. — Bernama
