65% of council budget next year goes to restoring Penang’s shine

THE Penang Municipal Council has allocated RM166.22mil for next year’s budget which carries the theme — ‘Transformation through the 3Cs and 1R’, (for Cleanliness, Congestion, Crime and Revenue).

Its president Patahiyah Ismail said the bulk of the budget would be used to improve the state’s cleanliness (RM107.95mil), reduce traffic congestion (RM25.98mil), improve revenue collection (RM21.71mil) and to reduce the crime rate (RM10.58mil).

“Among the things Penangites can look forward to is a smoother traffic flow on the island with the construction of new bus lanes in the George Town area next year.

“A total of RM2.37mil from the budget will be used to build bus lanes and improving pedestrian lanes. This will be part of our effort to improve traffic flow on the island.

“The focus will be on public transport as apart from building bus lanes, 250 bus stops will also be upgraded via the ‘private finance initiative’,” she during a council meeting at City Hall to announce the council’s 2012 budget yesterday.

Patahiyah said RM3.67mil would also be used for the maintenance of roads and public transportation.

Among the roads that will see an improved flow are Jalan Mesjid Negri, Jalan Scotland, Jalan Air Itam, Jalan Utama, Jalan Gottlieb, and Jalan Bagan Jermal.

The council also announced several projects that will take place next year such as the upgrading of City Hall, the upgrading of Balik Pulau Sports Complex, the installation of lifts at the Taman Tun Sardon community hall, and the upgrading of various community halls in the state.
