GEORGE TOWN: A woman in her 30s was believed to have tried to take her own life by slitting her wrist with a knife and a broken glass bottle.

In the incident, the woman who is believed to be suffering from depression, started wailing after slitting her left wrist and ran from her home towards an apartment on Jalan Gerbang Berjaya in Pulau Tikus nearby.

It was learnt that the public who saw the woman running towards the apartment building had called the police.

A female police officer managed to persuade the woman to give up the knife she was holding after about 20 minutes.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the incident happened at about 10.30am yesterday and the woman did not have any identification documents on her.

He said police had confiscated the knife and a half broken glass bottle which the woman had allegedly used to hurt herself.

“The case will be investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide, an offence that carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine or both,” he said.
