Japanese survives diving mishap by swimming a whopping 30km to safety

KUCHING: Guided by the stars and an uncanny will to live, Hisashi Koze mustered every ounce of energy in his battered body to swim to safety.

Koze, 39, the last diver presumed lost at sea in Saturday’s diving expedition, astonished reporters and search and rescue personnel when he reached Damai Puri Resort’s beachfront at 10am. Sun burnt, tired and emotional at times but speaking coherent English, the plucky Japanese had swum nonstop for close to 24 hours since Saturday afternoon.
