Penang Starwalk ‘a must’

FOR Mohamed Kasim Abu Tahir, the Penang Starwalk is an event he must participate in every year.

A staunch supporter of the event since he was in Form Five, 48-year-old Kasim brought 49 forms to register himself and 48 colleagues at The Star’s office on Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling in George Town.

Kasim, who is a Kontena Nasional Berhad executive, said that it was a tradition for him and his colleagues to participate together in Penang Starwalk every year.

“The event presents a great opportunity for my colleagues and I to bond and have a good time,” he added.

Another regular participant is Yeoh Swee Long, 48, who has been supporting the Penang Starwalk for more than 20 years.

“I may get lucky this year,” said Yeoh, adding that he has never won anything at the annual event.

Lecturer Hong Lee Fen, who registered at the Star Northern Hub in Bayan Lepas, said that the new route introduced for this edition would be a fantastic opportunity to experience something new.

“I prefer to have a new route as I can explore new things,” said Hong.

Hong added that she would like to get her hands on the lucky draw prizes as they were very attractive.

“I would like to win a hotel stay or a camera,” she said.

Meanwhile, first-timer Toh Ai Chen would be looking forward to viewing the scenery along the heritage route.

“It is great that I would get to see more of our heritage buildings along the route,” said 24-year-old Toh.

Registration is still open at Star Northern Hub in Bayan Lepas and The Star’s George Town office at 15, Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling (both places from 9.15am to 5pm) and at the Penang Times Square’s information counter at the ground floor from 10am to 10pm daily.

Registration can also be done online at http://sites.thestar.com.my/starwalk/ and a Facebook page has also been created for the event at http://www.facebook.com/StarWalk.my.

Entries for the competition category has already closed while that for the non-competition category will end on Sept 1 or when the 20,000-figure is reached, whichever is earlier. The registration fee is RM10 for non-competition walkers.

The platinum sponsor for the event is Genneva Syariah while the other main sponsors are Equine, 100Plus, AmBank, BP Diagnostic Centre, Golden Screen Cinema, Magnum, Malta, Maxis, Milo, Modenas, Nikon, One Community Worldwide, Pallas and Sunshine Wholesale Mart Sdn Bhd.

Penang Global Tourism is the supporting partner with Penang Times Square being the official venue provider and Rapid Penang the official transport provider.
