AFTER 30 long years of waiting, Taman Free School flat owners can now heave a sigh of relief following the Penang Municipal Council’s issuance of a special OC (Certificate of Occupation).
Datuk Keramat assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the 15 blocks of flats which were built in 1981 did not have any OC.
“It was a common practise in the 1980s when flats built and certified by the Public Works Department did not require an OC.
“Since the council has approved the special OC on March 28, the strata title application will soon be prepared and submitted to the Lands and Mines Department for approval,” he said after a gotong royong session at the flats with about 40 residents yesterday.
Jagdeep Singh said residents of the 655 units were expected to receive their strata titles in the next 12 months.
He also said lifts in blocks L, M and N at the flats which fail to stop at every floor would be upgraded at a cost of RM148,500.
“The lifts are stopping only on certain floors and this has caused inconvenience to the residents, especially senior citizens, as they have to take the stairs to reach a particular floor,” he said.
State Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai when contacted said the surveyors were currently working on the strata plan to be submitted to the Lands and Mines Department.
