KUANTAN: Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) gave a helping hand to single mother Nilam Sari Jaafar by giving her home in Kampung Chempaka here a facelift under a gotong royong involving 150 people.
Among the volunteers were the company’s employees, TM’s Multimedia College students and villagers from Kampung Chempaka.
They also built a working area in the compound for Nilam Sari to operate her kuih bahulu business from the baking skills she acquired by attending classes organised under TM’s Program Sejahtera.
Also present at the event were TM chairman Datuk Dr Halim Shafie and the company’s state general manager Md Rasidin Kadak.
Halim said TM was glad to provide assistance to Nilam Sari in giving her an improved living conditions.
“It also heartwarming to see the staff working hand-in-hand in this programe.
“We really hope that Nilam Sari’s family will enjoy and live more comfortably in the newly completed home,’’ he said.
Halim added that the activity was an initiative under TM’s Program Sejahtera which is in its second year.
“By participating in Program Sejahtera, we now can reach out to other groups in the society who need help and support.
“At TM, we emphasise on the sustainability aspect when making our contributions as we believe in helping the community or individuals to stand on their own feet,’’ Halim said.
Apart from refurbishing her house, TM also offered Nilam Sari’s daughter Nur Aini Abdullah, 19, a scholarship to pursue her studies in a Diploma Management course with Multimedia at TMs Multimedia College in Kuala Lumpur.
Throughout her studies, Nur Aini will be provided with accommodation and financial assistance and she would also be joining her elder sister, Nik Nurhidayat who is studying at the same college.
