Philanthropist sets up society to help the poor here and abroad

SOME people’s lives are changed forever by a turn of events, as in the case of Datuk Tan Leong Hoo — the founder and president of the Xim Phou Moon Welfare Society Malaysia.

A pilgrimage trip of sorts to Sri Lanka in the late 1980’s had exposed him to the harsh living reality there — people did not have proper shelter as the continuous war and in-fighting had rendered thousands homeless and many were using blankets as their only cover.

For Tan, he had gone to Sri Lanka to find out how he could have everlasting riches. It was after seeing the plight of the local community there that he realised that the real riches were one’s true contentment — to be thankful for what he already had back home.

Meditation and retreat there inspired him to lead a renewed vow in life — he wanted to do away with managing health centres.
