HONG Seng Group, a leading player in the commercial vehicle industry, is confident of meeting the country’s rising demand for compact-yet-spacious trucks with its custom-made five-tonne light trucks.
Its managing director Teoh Hai Hin said the company had signed a distributorship agreement with China’s Jinbei Vehicle Manufacturing Co Ltd to assemble, distribute, market and service the latter’s JBC light trucks in the country.
“We specially custom-made two models of five-tonne light trucks that come with the standard four tyres to suit our Malaysian customers’ preference.
“Usually, such models in China would be designed with two pairs of tyres in the rear,” he said.
He was speaking after Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha launched the JBC light trucks at the company’s Hong Seng Motor Trade Centre in Sungai Lokan, Butterworth, on Monday.
Also present were Shenyang Jinbei Vehicle Manufacturing Co Ltd general manager of international trade Xu Yan Qiu, Chinese embassy representative Kang Yi Ming and Hong Seng Group chairman Ong Ah Hua.
Teoh said the two JBC light truck models introduced were the long wheelbase trucks with 3m long decks for light goods and short wheelbase trucks with 2m long decks for heavy goods.
He said the trucks were the first of their kind in Malaysia with a five-tonne gross vehicle weight in the four-wheel truck category.
He said the company hoped to produce 200 trucks per month, adding that it had targeted to sell some 800 units this year.
“The trucks are available through our 50 dealers in peninsular Malaysia. We hope to make them available in east Malaysia by July,” he said, adding the company would also market the trucks in several South- East Asian and Middle East countries.
Teoh said the government’s announcement of a new motor vehicle policy in 2009 had opened the doors for the company to bring in more commercial vehicle models.
Hong Seng Group, which turns 47 this year, was founded by Teoh Teng Seng who started a humble business carrying out repairs as well as selling spare parts and marine machinery.
The company has since diversified to cover the sale and distribution of Japanese commercial vehicles, machinery, marine engines, marine gear, spare parts, generators, agricultural machinery and truck assembly.
