Snatch thief lands in hospital

KUCHING: A 32-year-old suspect who snatched a grandmother’s gold necklace was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was riding pillion on crashed.

His accomplice, who was riding the motorcycle, managed to escape with the gold necklace worth RM1,000.

The incident happened at about 7.30am yesterday at Three Hills Garden here when the victim, in her 60s, was walking towards a van selling vegetables near her house.

The suspects on the motorcycle were armed with an axe and a knife. They pushed the woman to the ground and one of them put a knife to her neck and grabbed her gold necklace.

Two brothers in a passing car saw the robbery and tried to help the victim. As the suspects made their escape, they crashed into the car.

The two brothers escaped unhurt but their car was seriously damaged.

The suspect, who sustained serious head injuries, was handed to the police and later admitted to the hospital.

His pregnant wife rushed to the hospital when she received a call from the police.

It is learnt that the suspect works as a security guard. He and his wife live in Petrajaya.
