Seven caught in drunken stupor at ‘dangdut’ outlet

GEORGE TOWN: Six men and a woman were detained during a police raid at a ‘dangdut’ outlet in Relau in the pre-dawn hours on Thursday for alleged offences under the Syariah Law.

The operation, ‘Ops Noda Bersepadu’, lasted from shortly after midnight to 5am.

It was organised by the police from the state north-east district criminal investigation department (CID), led by DSP Shahurinain Jais together with Penang Islamic Affairs Department (JAIPP) officers.

The seven who were seen in a drunken stupor were among 20 male and 22 female patrons who were detained for checks by the authorities.

JAIPP enforcement head Khairul Azman Azizan said the seven would be charged under Section 19 of the Syariah Crimes Enact-ment 1996 for allegedly consuming liquor.

The seven were brought to the north-east district police headquarters at Patani Road for further investigation.

DSP Shahurinain also said that during the same operation, three men tested positive for substance abuse for alleging taking amphetamine and ketamine drugs.

A karaoke outlet in Bukit Jam- bul was also found to be ope- rating with an expired permit while another in Kompleks Seri Relau and a discotheque in Lebuh Campbell were fined for operating beyond permitted hours.

The operation involved 56 personnel from the police who were assisted by 15 officers from JAIPP.
