SARAWAK has won the bid to stage the Wakeboard World Cup Stop at the Kuching Waterfront from Sept 16 to 18.

Assistant Tourism Minister Datuk Talib Zulphilip said the competition known as the ‘2011 IWWF Sarawak Wakeboard World Cup’ will see participation of world class wakeboarders from 15 countries.

“They include teams from the United States, Canada, China, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Sweden, Netherlands, South Africa, Russia, Argentina and South Korea,” he said at a press conference to officially announced the staging of the three-day event yesterday.

He said among the world class wakeboarders coming to Kuching are Philip Soven, Dallas Friday, Andrew Adkison and Raimi Merritt (USA), Dan Knott and Nicola Butler (Great Britain), Harley Clifford (Australia) and Sasha Christian (Singapore).

“In addition to the main competition, the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism and Heritage has also decided to bring in the world famous ‘Stars of Florida Waterski Show Team’ to wow holiday makers and watersports enthusiasts from Malaysia and visitors from around the world,” said Talib.

Talib said the 2011 IWWF Sarawak Wakeboard World Cup is in conjunction with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak’s birthday celebrations.

Marketing and media chairman of International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation, Des Bubke Kennedy said with over 30 million active waterski and wakeboard participants both as a recreational sport and competitive sport in 92 countries, the IWWF organised waterski and wakeboard World Cup Series in the premier event for all top watersports athletes.

He said to date 30 successful World Cup Stops have already brought the spills and thrills to high density centres.

“These include major cities in France, Egypt, Russia, China, Great Britain, Ireland, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia and other countries.

“Those World Cup series bring with it a highly valuable TV, Internet and press package. Two different edited TV products are distributed to over 500 million viewers in all key tourism markets,” he added.

He said a live webcast would also be implemented for the event.

“These will greatly help to highlight Sarawak’s unique features overseas.”

He said the arrival of the large team of World Cup stars, officials and fans will also make Kuching the place to be for all watersports fans and holiday makers.
