The hospitality and tourism industries have always been big contributors when it comes to national earnings, making them regulars in the list of top five revenue earners in Malaysia.
Not surprisingly the government has made them part of the economic transformation programmes while the Sarawak government has included tourism as one of the 10 priority industries in Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy.
Globally, these industries are also huge revenue earners, chalking up billions of ringgit in profit.
Recent growth within the hospitality and tourism sectors has also been immense, meaning that those within the industries or planning to enter them have good job prospects.
“In Malaysia, the tourism industry was the country’s second biggest foreign exchange earner with 23.6mil tourist arrivals in 2009 and tourist receipts amounting to RM53.3bil, compared to RM49.6bil in 2008 with 22mil tourist arrivals,” said SEGi College Sarawak senior programme coordinator Carleen Teo.
