Gift of sight for seniors

HEALTH Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai launched a joint community project by Optimax Eye Specialist Centre and Alcon to provide free surgery to improve the vision of 40 senior citizens identified with varying degrees of cataract.

“Age-related cataract accounts for 39.1% of preventable blindness in Malaysia, according to a research conducted by the Ministry of Health in February 2010. Senior citizens, especially those who are poor and living in rural areas are sometimes unable to reach proper healthcare due to immobility. Sometimes ignorance or hanging on to old beliefs stop them from seeking treatment,” he said.
