JOHOR BARU: Veteran angler Mohd Fadil Rashid landed 650g banang susu fish to win the Johor Baru City Council’s fishing competition recently.
The 28-year-old who had taken part in many fishing competitions without winning walked away with RM10,000 in cash prize and a home theater set for his efforts.
Held in conjunction with the Sultan Johor’s 52nd birthday celebration, the angling competition attracted some 623 participants.
The event was held at the popular Stulang Laut waterfront overlooking Singapore, participants brazed the hot sun from 8am until mid-noon.
“The money is timely for my wedding next year,’’ he said at the prize giving ceremony by the Johor Baru mayor Mohd Jaffar Awang .
Another angler Sumardi Damiri, 51, was frustrated for coming second with a siakap (sea bass) fish with a weight difference of 100g.
The factory machine mechanic received RM4,000 in cash.
He said anglers should not have high hope in catching bountiful fish as it has largely has to do with one’s luck.
Sumardi however, was grateful to be among the top three winners considering the number of participants taking part and most of the time, his fishing line had entangled with others as they sat too close to each other.
Factory worker Azulizan Samsu, 24, took the opportunity of the state public holiday to take part in the event was rewarded when he took the third spot and won RM1, 500 cash with his 300g kipang fish.
“I was more happy to win a home theatre set for registering early as it cost more than RM3,000 if I were to buy it on my own,’’ he said.
