FOR the first time in Malaysia, Rado, the Swiss watchmaker, presented the Rado Young Design Prize Malaysia 2010 (RYDP) to three talented artists.
The prize presentation was held at Suria KLCC recently with an exhibition featuring the unique artworks by the finalists.
The RYDP is held to honour the inspiration and work of outstanding young creative individuals in Malaysia and has travelled to Vienna, Tokyo, Shanghai, Milan and New York.
Winner Shahrul Anuwar Mohammed, 24, from Perak took home RM10,000. His ‘Fernature Chaise Lounge’ took the form of a fern.
“The work is inspired by nature but it also based on our spine,” he said, adding that it would fit the modern home furniture lifestyle.
He said it took him a year to make, from the research, design to prototype stages.
In second place, Looi Lin Cheng, 23, received RM5,000 while third place winner Chua Poh Ang, 25, received RM3,000.
They each received the r5.5 watch designed by Jasper Morrison.
Looi also won the favourite designer title and received an additional RM1,000.
Prizes were presented by Rado brand manager Bernard Yong and Rado Switzerland vice-president marketing Patric Zingg.
According to Zingg they received 700 entries and choosing the finalists was tough.
He added that they wanted to invest in the future and offer artists more exposure as they are the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
Guests were entertained by sand art painting by Loong Bee, who paid tribute to Rado and its passion for design.
Loong artistically outlined the evolution of the materials that are used in the creation of Rado watches, from hard metal, high-tech ceramics to high-tech diamonds, and ending the painting with the award-winning r5.5 watch.
Guests also got a glimpse of the Rado ceramic exhibition and this year’s watch novelties, which was recently launched in Malaysia.
