SEVERAL places in Jalan Teku Lama, Sibu, have been turned into dumping grounds by irresponsible residents.
The most obvious was by the side of a road where various items including iron wire has been dumped.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) health officer James Su Teck Miew said that much of the solid industrial waste was thrown there out of convenience.
Many drivers using Jalan Teku Lama to avoid traffic jams due to road upgrading projects in Persiaran Brooke had complained of the eyesore.
SMC, stressed Su during a visit to the dumping ground yesterday, would not be lenient in meting out punishments on the culprits and the individuals involved would likely be fined up to RM1,000.
“We will come here occasionally to conduct checks to make sure it is clean,” said Su, adding that residents should use rubbish bins provided by SMC for proper trash disposal.
He revealed that SMC would do away with its charges for its dump site in Jalan Seng Ling from next year for the convenience of residents.
Currently, the charges imposed are RM3 for vehicles weighing three tonnes and above, RM5 for five tonnes above while vehicles of less than three tonnes can dump for free.
