Malaysia Day-Lantern Festival celebration in Sibu tonight

AFTER weeks of preparation, a moment of joy and festivity will arrive at 7pm in Sibu tonight with the official opening of this year’s Lantern Festival.

As today is also the Malaysia Day celebration, the Jalur Gemilang will be hoisted at the ceremony to be officiated by Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

This second Lantern Festival is organised by the Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and other Chinese organisations.

According to the programme tonight, SCCCI president Hu Yu Siong will give a speech first after the lighting-up of the lanterns and will be followed by a speech from Wong.

The judging of the entries for a lantern-making contest will then begin.

Twenty-one groups from government departments, companies, associations and schools will display beautiful decorative combinations of lanterns for the contest.

The night will include a lantern-guessing contest and a live concert by local recording artistes.
