SELAYANG Municipal Council (MPS) under the team name Honduras thrashed Argentina 5-0 in the final of the month-long Futsal Tour that ended at the Mini Stadium in Shah Alam recently.
The Argentina team were players from Klang Municipal Council (MPK).
For their effort, MPS pocketed RM4,000 while MPK received RM3,000 as runners-up.
Sepang Municipal Council (MPSp), which played under the name Paraguay, were placed third while Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) were fourth.
Besides futsal, there were traditional games like shuttlecock and ball juggling as well as dribbling challenges during the tour.
A total of 12 local councils — MPAJ, MPS, MPSp, MPK, Shah Alam City Council, Petaling Jaya City Council, Subang Jaya Municipal Council, Hulu Selangor District Council, Kajang Municipal Council, Sabak Bernam District Council, Kuala Selangor District Council and Kuala Langat District Council — took part in the tour and played hosts for some of the events.
Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) deputy chairman Amirudin Shari, who is also Batu Caves assemblyman, said this was the second season for the tour but stressed that this time around, it was unique.
“Inspired by the World Cup, these 32 teams adopted the names of the countries participating and followed the World Cup format,’’ he said.
Amirudin added that there were junior development football programmes held during weekends throughout Selangor where 2,000 children were involved.
“For Selangor, we have reached about 50% of our target and hope to reach 80% before the end of the year.
“The just concluded Tour is a healthy activity to keep and generate interest for sports among the local councils.
“We hope to make it an annual event,’’ Amiruddin added.
