BY adding a sentimental touch to a wholesome drink, Jerald Tsen won the heart of three judges with his mocktail concoction.
The 24-year-old bar manager beat 16 other contestants with a refreshing, green, ice-blended concoction named ‘Twister Zing’ at the Twister’s Twistable Mocktail Contest held on June 11 at Studio V, 1 Utama shopping centre.
The contestants were shortlisted from an online contest that ended on May 31 based on their creative mocktail recipes. It was organised by Tropicana Twister in collaboration with Kuali.com.
Contestants were required to prepare a mocktail using Tropicana Twister, with the flavours Orange with Pulp and/or Apple with Vitamic C, within 15 minutes.
They were allowed to use other Permanis beverages. Tsen’s Twister Zing impressed the judges by creatively using the puree of ginger and hazelnut, plus mint leaf, to transform apple and orange juices into something quite magical.
“Mint leaf comes to mind when I miss my hometown Sabah. This ingredient is used in our laksa speciality.
“Also, my father likes to add ginger into Chinese tea while the idea to use hazelnut came to me when I was experimenting with apple juice.
“Cooking the two ingredients will produce a puree that gives me the flavours I want,” said Tsen who had also won an award for his cocktail recipe in 2008.
Stevena Chin, 21, from Kuala Lumpur, and Celina Joseph, 39, from Puchong, won the second and third prizes with their concoctions named ‘Grande Tropicana Twister’ and ‘Twister Orange Punch’ respectively.
The judges were Permanis group marketing manager Hemalatha Ragavan, Cilantro Culinary School assistant training manager Lily Chai and Hotel Istana food and beverage director Tom Spaan.
