LEE Chong Wei, Taufik Hidayat, Lin Dan and Peter Gade-Christensen may be the stars of the Thomas & Uber Cup finals at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, but you cannot ignore the supporters who come out in full force to cheer their favourite teams.
On the opening day, Malaysia did not play in the Thomas Cup tie as their opponents Nigeria failed to arrive on time.
But the supporters, numbering about 100, clad in yellow and blue were ready to cheer Chong Wei and teammates. About 30 of the supporters were from the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).
BJSS senior assistant Suhaimi Sun Abdullah said the National Sports Council (NSC) had initiated the cheerleading group.
“We were requested to send our students. We had picked 30 students and they are from Form One, Form Two and Form Four. We did not pick the Form Three and Form Five students as we do not want to disrupt their studies,’’ said Suhaimi.
The students will be part of the Malaysian supporters group throughout the Thomas & Uber Cup finals.
They will be present for Malaysia’s matches in both the competitions.
But it is the Indonesians who had always gained when they played in Malaysia. Their fans are quite vociferous but create a cheerful atmosphere.
On Sunday, about 200 had gathered at the Putra Stadium to show their support to the Indonesian team against Australia in both the Thomas and Uber Cup.
Besides supporters from Malaysia and Indonesia, there were also fans from South Africa and Denmark. They also came in their national colours to support their respective teams.
However, the number of supporters is expected to increase during the quarter-finals.
