Municipal council lines up 50 activities for Miri May Fest

THIS year’s edition of the Miri May Fest promises to be bigger and better with 50 events lined up over the month.

Organised by the Miri Municipal Council with the theme Together We Celebrate, the fest will be launched at the Miri Outdoor Stadium on Saturday.

Simultaneously, the Say No to Plastic Bags and Green Shopping Day campaign will be held.

Highlights of the fest include the Miri International Jazz Festival on May 14 and 15, the Miri City Day street parade on May 15, Miss Tourism Intercontinental World grand finals on May 20, an exhibition on the 100th anniversary of the first oil discovery in Miri on May 20 and the Miri City International Deep-Sea Fishing competition from May 21 to 23.

All sorts of sports and community-based activities are also in the pipeline.

The sports events include a three-on-three street basketball tournament on May 2, Miri City 5th anniversary celebration run on May 8, 11th annual Bakam Challenge for off-road mountain biking and trail running on May 15, table tennis competition on May 15 and 16 and softball championship on May 21 to 23.

Interesting activities include a cake-baking competition on May 2, a Michael Jackson impersonation contest on May 7, Mother’s Day look-alike photography competition on May 9 and super junior talent contest on May 15.

There will also be blood donation exercises on May 1 and 15, an environmental talk on May 4, story telling contest on May 8, chess competition on May 15 and 16, river estuary fishing competition on May 16 and Gawai Dayak celebration on May 22.

Miri will also celebrate its City Day on May 21 with a concert at the Indoor Stadium and community dinner at the Civic Centre followed by the 1Malaysia Mammoth Dance and Cultural Performance at the Outdoor Stadium on May 22.
