More Malaysians suffering from obesity

STATISTICS from the Health Ministry revealed that the number of Malaysians suffering from obesity is seeing an increasing trend over the last few years.

There is no latest data, but based on recent statistics, obesity among Malaysians has increased from 4.4 per cent in 1996 to 14 per cent in 2006.

During the same period, Malaysians who are overweight have also increased from 16.6 per cent to 29.1 per cent.

This was disclosed during a recent three-day free health screening — Fernleaf Nutri Check — by Fernleaf at a supermarket in Sibu, recently.

The free health screening was Fernleaf’s initiative to combat childhood over-weight and obesity in line with the National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia.

The company’s business development supervisor for Fonterra Brands (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, George Wong, said the free health screening was launched in December last year.

Fonterra is the main importer of Fernleaf milk from New Zealand in Malaysia.
