Police say thank you

THE Star’s Ann Tan and M. Sivanantha Sharma were among journalists in Penang who received commendation letters from the police in conjunction with the 203rd Police Day celebration on Thursday.

Tan received the letter from George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng at the celebration at the George Town district police headquarters while Sivanantha Sharma got his at the celebration at the South Seberang Prai district police headquarters in Jawi.

Also receiving commendation letters at the celebration at the two locations were 11 other journa-lists from other publications and RTM.

Tan and Sivanantha got their letters for their contributions through the crime reports that they wrote.

Also receiving commendation letters at the George Town celebration were 54 police personnel while 20 policemen, eight members of the public and five Police Families Association (Perkep) members got similar letters from South Seberang Prai OCPD Supt Shafien Mamat at the other celebration.

Supt Shafien thanked members of the media for highlighting the successes of the police.

“Their efforts in assisting the police is vital to reduce criminal activities,” he said.

At the Police Day celebration at the state police headquarters on Penang Road, state deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah handed out 15 commendation letters to police personnel and members of the public.

In his speech, SAC Tun Hisan commended Perkep members for being the inspiration and motivation for their spouses in combating crime.

“I wish to thank Perkep members for their great understanding. Sometimes, policemen were not allowed to go on leave even during major celebrations.

“But I am glad Perkep members know this. Not only did they not complain having to forgo the time spent with their loved ones, they also provided encouragement to their spouses in serving the force diligently,” he said.

The celebration began with SAC Tun Hisan inspecting a guard-of-honour followed by a message from Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan.

Marine Operations Force Region I commander Asst Comm Zainul Abidin Hasan presented 73 commendation letters to marine policemen for carrying out their duties well and effectively at the Police Day celebration at the Batu Uban marine police base.

ACP Zainul later told reporters that marine police conducted a total of 243 operations so far this year in Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Perak and Selangor during which 1,519 fishing boats and vessel were inspected.

“We made 113 arrests and seized goods worth RM1.7mil. We also issued RM3,100 in compounds for various offences,” he added.
