THE Kedah Open cycling championships and the Sport Excel-Milo champion-ships, which will be held in Alor Setar from tomorrow until Sunday, have attracted more than 300 riders from every state except Sarawak.
Organised by the Kedah Sports Council, the events will be held at the Golden Jubilee Park on Jalan Suka Menanti.
Council director Syed Khairol Anuar Syed Abudin said the two events were aimed at providing an avenue for some of the national female riders to qualify for the Asian Cycling championships scheduled to be held in the United Arab Emirates in April.
“The Open meet is mainly to cater for some female riders who are aiming to qualify for the Asian meet in April while the Sport Excel-Milo championships will be primarily to test our local riders who have been selected to participate in the Sukma Games in Malacca this year,” he added.
Maziaton Mohd Radzi from Kedah will be among some of the female riders who will get a chance to make it to the Asian meet.
Others contenders are Mariana Ahmad (Sabah), Azian Alias (Johor) and Nurul Akma Badrulzaman (Selangor).
The championships cater for cyclists between the ages of 16 and 18 for both boys and girls.
On the first day are the Criterium races for the 16, 17 and 18 age groups in the morning session followed by the individual time-trials over 23.5km for each of the age groups in the afternoon.
On the second day, they will participate in massed start races over 67.3km in the same age groups in the morning.
The individual time trial for female riders (Open) and Open Criterium for men will be flagged off on Saturday afternoon.
The gruelling Open mass start for both male and female riders covering a distance of 120.6km will be held at 8.30am on the last day.
While waiting for the mass start races to end, special Criterium races for 14-year-old and six-year-old children will be held.
