Local runner bags the women’s title at first night marathon

MALAYSIA’S A. Amutha stole the limelight at the inaugural Putrajaya Night Marathon when she won the women’s Open crown at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya recently.

Amutha, a regular road runner, clocked 3’32:29 to cross the finishing line almost five minutes ahead of Thailand’s Dusanee Saeheng (3’38:20). Another Malaysian — Michelle Tan Bee Kiang — was a distant third on 3’46:29.

National marathon coach P. Sidamparam was pleased to see a Malaysian win the gruelling 42km run.

“Amutha has proven that she is capable of running the marathon. We hope to see her win more marathons in the near future,” he said.

Former international R. Muniandy also confirmed his status as the best Malaysian marathon runner in the men’s open category. The 32-year-old Muniandy finished an impressive 14th in the category behind a group of foreign participants from Africa.

Kenyan Alex Melly crossed the finishing line first in 2’28:47 followed by countrymen James Cneution Tallam (2’32:28) and Edward Kiprotich Kiptoo (2’35.06).

Muniandy, who has personal best of 2’34.00, clocked at the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon last year, was timed at 2’44.51.

Although the marathon was held at night, Muniandy said the terrain was tough and they had to go through some hilly stretches.

“The weather was also humid. All the participants, including the foreigners, ran a slow race as they were cautious. The organisers should be commended for offering cash prizes to Malaysians. It certainly was encouraging and we saw a lot of local participants in the 42km run,” Muniandy said.

The Putrajaya Night Marathon, organised by World of Action and Twenty First Century First, was a big success with about 8,000 participants in the fray. Besides the 42km run, the marathon also had the half marathon, a 7.7km run and a 5km fun run.

The sponsors were Telekom Malaysia, Hong Leong Bank, Privasia Technology, Putrajaya Holdings, Kenanga Investment Bank, Powerbar, Sports Planet, 100 Plus, NTV 7, Fly FM, One FM and Milo.

World Action Sports chairman Tengku Zafrul Aziz said they were impressed with the crowd support for the marathon.

“We had a crowd of about 20,000 at the venue.

“It was nice to see Malaysians coming to show their support for the innovative event,” said Tengku Zafrul.

Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Association (FTAAA) secretary S. Vegiyathuman said the venue was ideal for a marathon.

“We agree that the route was a tough one. But we have received encouraging feedback as we were able to provide ample facilities for the participants.

“Of course, there were some shortcomings but we will look into overcoming them next year,” he said.
