Unilever employees help kids from orphanages to prepare for school

DOING good for the community has always been Unilever Malaysia’s motto.

In living up to this mission, Unilever (Malaysia) Holdings Sdn Bhd recently organised an outing for children of two orphanages to purchase school supplies at Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur, in preparation for the new school year in January.

The event was organised under Touching Hearts, Unilever Malaysia’s employee-driven charity initiative.

Some 70 children from Rumah Shalom in Puchong and Ehsan Ash-Shakur in Rawang were taken on a half-day outing to shop for school uniforms at Kamdar and school shoes at Bata.

Accompanying them were 30 Unilever Malaysia employees, who acted as foster parents and attended to all their needs.

The children were also treated to a sumptuous lunch at The Chicken Rice Shop.

Those who were born in December were the focus of some special attention: they got to blow out the candles on their birthday cakes while the rest sang “Happy Birthday” song to them.

To round off the outing, the children were also treated to a screening of Disney’s The Princess & The Frog, at which they had a really good time.

“While the activities during the outing may seem ordinary to many people, these are special moments to these underprivileged children that they treasure,” Unilever human resource and corporate relations director Nik Mustapha Nik Mohamed said.

Prior to leaving Mid Valley, the children also received specially printed school bags, courtesy of Unilever, as well as stationery for them to use in school.

Since its inception in 2004, Unilever Malaysia’s Touching Hearts has initiated many charity efforts that focused on enabling education and providing for the needy in society.
