PROFESSIONAL model Diana Lim Ling Woei will be a vegetarian on her birthday today, because this year, it coincides with the Nine Emperor Gods festival which starts on Sunday.
A devout Taoist, Lim said any party plans would have to wait till 10 days later.
“It is a pity that I won’t be able to eat my birthday cake,” said the Penang lass, who turns 25 today.
She will be travelling to Kuala Lumpur to offer prayers at her si fu’s temple in Cheras to mark the start of the festival as well as to give thanks for her “big day”.
Lim credits her mother for her devotion and admits that not many young Chinese are upkeeping the traditional beliefs.
“In accordance with Taoist beliefs, I try to be a vegetarian on the 1st and 15th of every lunar month but there are times I forget and accidentally eat meat,” she added.
Lim got involved in modelling when she was approached by a talent scout at a Starbucks cafe where she worked.
“Working at Starbucks was one of the best decisions I have ever made because I learnt a lot about responsibility and how to work systematically.
“Being a Barista also turned me into a coffee drinker. I never drank coffee until I worked there and now I know how to differentiate between different types of coffee beans and whether the cup of coffee was well made,” she said, advising young people that they must not think only of money when they look for a job, but, rather, see it as a way to gain experience.
Lim is also featured in www.dailychilli.com – The Star’s latest news portal – under the Buzz and Hot Babes section. She has so far received over 20,000 votes from the website readers.
What do you like about KL?
The city is so modern, upbeat and vibrant. Every time I come to KL, I feel so energised. And, not only are there many entertainment spots and tourist attractions, it is also the place where people come from all over the country to chase their dreams.
What do you dislike about KL?
I come from Penang, where things move at a slower pace. I also do not like the traffic jam and impersonal nature of the people in KL. Every one seems to be in a hurry.
Where is your favourite place to hang out?
Ikea! I love going there because I like to “borrow” ideas from them to improve my present place as well as to motivate me to get my dream house. I also like the Rainforest area at 1Utama Shopping Centre because I usually meet up with friends at the Starbucks outlet there and, at the same time, listen to the sound of the waterfall which is very soothing.
What is your favourite food?
Whatever my mum cooks! As I live away from home, I always look forward to her cooking whenever I am there. I can finish four bowls of soup at one sitting.
What do you do to relax?
Facebook! I relax by spending my evenings with my trusty laptop, adding and sharing stories with my friends. I have more than 2,000 FB friends, including more than 100 personal ones. Come visit me at www.facebook.com/dianalim.
