Fashion showcase by Malaysian designers

DESIGNER Amanda Brown’s collection stood out when, instead of the usual chiffon, cotton or silk dresses, her models strutted down the catwalk in outfits made from old newspapers.

Brown’s wearable art pieces were enhanced with ribbons and flowers, with the designer herself appearing in a dress made from newspapers when she stood on stage to acknowledge the crowd.

She was one of the many designers whose creative works were shown at the Malaysian Official Designers’ Association (Moda) Fashion Gateway held during 1 Utama Shopping Centre’s Fashion on 1 fashion week.

The event featured the Malaysia Young Designers’ Showcase and Moda Unity Fashion Showcase, as well as a presentation by brands like Jendela KL, Noor Arfa, Noir, Gallo and Jarumas Concepts.

The Moda Unity Fashion Showcase highlighted fabulous and unique pieces for both women and men by Moda designers like Melinda Looi, Alvin Tay, Carven Ong, Jovian Mandagie, Keith Kee, Key Ng, Nazleen Noor, Beatrice Looi and Karl Ng.

The Malaysia Young Designers’ Showcase presented creations by the top 12 finalists of the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Young Designers’ Award 2009, including the top three winners Andy Yap, Michelle Shia and Joe Chia.

The previous year’s winner, Joyce Wong, also had her collection featured at the event, while emcee Edwin Sumun had the crowd in stitches with his entertaining antics.

“Events like this fashion showcase is about every one coming together to bring the fashion industry forward,” said Moda president Gillian Hung, who was attired in an all-black ensemble by Yap, the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Young Designers’ Award 2009 winner.

“Moda is a non-profit organisation that has been around for the last 19 years to support and encourage togetherness in the fashion industry.”

Under its aegis, Moda will represent the interests of Malaysia’s fashion designers.

It aims to nurture the growth and help develop the needs of the fashion industry, as well as provide a platform for Malaysian fashion designers.

A special promotion on the Moda Fashion Gateway will be available throughout this month, with discounts for Maybank credit card holders who buy merchandise by selected designers and brands.
