KUANTAN: Story-telling is the conveyance of events in words, images and sound often by improvisation and with the use of decorative details.
This was what five groups of participants did at a state-level story-telling competition about the nation’s history, prominent figures, warriors and royal institutions.
The event, organised by the state Information Department at Pahang Skills Development Centre, was attended by students of local and private colleges in Semambu here recently.
The participants were creative in their props and presentations and produced entertaining but simple shows to instil moral values from statesmen and warriors such as second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, Mat Kilau and Datuk Bahaman.
Some of them sang and recited sajak and syair with titles like Lantera Mat Kilau (Mat Kilau’s Song), Tanah Berdaulat, Pantang Derhaka (Sovereign Land, Treason Forbid) and Junjung Kasih — an expression of thanks to royalty.
Others performed silat while many acted their way into the hearts of the judges.
The winner was Orang Biasa, a group from Temerloh led by Shahril Firdhaus Abd Jazam with a performance on Tun Abdul Razak - the father of development.
They won RM2,000 in cash, a trophy and a certificate and will represent Pahang at the national-level competition in Kedah on June 12-13.
Anak Buluh Betong, a group from Kuantan which staged Tun Razak: National Patriot, was the first runner-up while Ekspresi Mustika from Jerantut (Lantera Mat Kilau) took home the third prize.
The groups Anak Raub from Raub (Jejak Pahlawan: Dato Bahaman Orang Kaya Setia Semantan) and Hamzah Fansuri (Rukun Negara Ke-2; Kesetiaan Kepada Raja Dan Negara) were placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Guai assemblyman Norol Azali Sulaiman, who represented State Information, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin, gave away the prizes.
In his speech, Norol Azali said such competitions were a way to educate the younger generation on the struggles of statesmen and warriors and upholding the country’s independence and sovereignty.
Also present was state information director Datuk Hasnah Hassan.
