Chance for juniors to excel in sports

THE National Sports Council (NSC) and National Sports Institute (NSI) have joined SportsUnite’s celebration for the sports carnival in Bukit Jalil on April 11.

The NSC is providing the venue and facilities, while NSI has offered medical assistance to the carnival involving five sports — five-a-side football, netball, 3-on-3 basketball, indoor hockey and boccia (special athletes).

The NSC director of event management Abdul Jalil Abdullah said they were happy to be part of the carnival promoting sports culture at the grassroots.

“We support the carnival to encourage youngsters to be active in sports. It was through similar programmes that we spotted the two cyclists — Azizul Hasni Awang and Rizal Tisin — who won medals for Malaysia in the recent World Track Cycling Championships in Poland.

“Both Azizul and Rizal are from the rural areas. We hope the carnival will be a platform for other juniors to gain exposure and excel in their respective sports,’’ said Abdul Jalil at the launch of the carnival.

The five-a-side football will have two age groups - Under-12 and Under-16 - and the organisers are expecting 24 teams for each group. The netball competition is for girls aged 18 and below.

The 3-on-3 basketball has three categories — Under-15 and Under-18 for boys and Under-18 for girls. The indoor hockey has one age group — Under-12 — for boys and girls and eight teams each.

SportsUnite executive director Datuk Dina Rizal said the carnival was part of their fifth anniversary celebrations.

“It has been our tradition to initiate a carnival promoting unity through sports. We are expecting about 900 participants and 100 officials to be involved in the carnival,’’ said Dina.

The Kuala Lumpur Hockey Associa-tion (KLHA) will co-ordinate the indoor hockey competition.

In keeping with SportsUnite’s vision, all teams should comprise players from at least two races. The carnival has garnered support from Milo, Bata, Figos and Revive Isotonic drinks. Each participant will receive souvenir Milo T-shirt and a certificate.

The top four teams in each sport and each category will receive medals, Milo products, Bata shoes and Figos jerseys.

Schools and clubs keen to take part in the carnival can contact Nik Muhd Radzi - 019- 3519 934 (football); Choo Kon Lee – 016-3519 934 (netball); Rajamanickam- 03-2282 7002/012-268 6944 (indoor hockey); Wong Wing Wai- 012-358 5911 (basketball).
