KUANTAN: Lawyers in the country were reminded to stay true to their profession and avoid unethical practice.
High Court Judge Justice V.T. Singham said legal practitioners must heed the code of ethics stipulated in the Legal Profession Act.
He added that all lawyers including the senior ones must be thorough in their work.
“There are still many who do not pay attention to the conditions set in the code of conduct while some do not know about it at all.
“I will issue a copy of the codes today and it is for all to read and understand.
It is not just for keeping,” he said at the admission to the bar ceremony of two lawyers here.
Singham added that those who wanted to be successful in this line must work hard as the profession is a serious business.
“One must have deep passion and should not embark into the career merely on ‘parents’ orders,” he said.
He also expressed his regret that many lawyers did not use suitable legal jargons during court proceedings such as using ‘him or her’ or ‘you’ instead of ‘learned friend’ to the opponent.
Another reminder issued by the judge was for lawyers to avoid getting involved in disputes among themselves to the point of being unprofessional or trying to drag a judge into the conflict.
Singham also commented on lawyers who refused to bring their bags to keep their files but instead, preferred to carry by hands.
“They look disorganised with files in the hands when it would be much better to have a bag.
“That is smart and orderly,” he added.
