PEKAN: Giat Mara is set to train over 5,000 graduates and workers expected to be retrenched this year to enable them to find new jobs.
Deputy Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said that 100 retrenched workers were being trained at Giat Mara centres and given a monthly allowance of RM500 each.
“The 5,000-trainee target is based on the capacity of the 206 Giat Mara centres nationwide.
“The centres are willing to take in more people and the matter is being discussed by the related ministries,” he told reporters at the closing of the Giat Mara Innovation Carnival here.
Saifuddin anticipated that newly-employed workers could be the most likely to lose their jobs.
“What is disturbing is that the retrenchment expected to occur in midyear will coincide with the graduation of thousands of university students,” he said.
Meanwhile, Giat Mara chief executive officer Meriyam Abd Majid said the centres would offer retraining to retrenched workers on a full-time or part-time basis.
“The centres have vast experience in training unemployed graduates and turning them into successful entrepreneurs,” she said. — Bernama
