KUANTAN: Incumbents in five of the 14 Umno divisions in Pahang will be challenged during the party elections.
State Umno secretary Abdul Rahim Abas said the five divisions were Raub, Paya Besar, Indera Mahkota, Jerantut and Lipis.
He said incumbents in the remaining nine divisions were not expected to be challenged.
Abdul Rahim said Kuala Krau Umno division chief Datuk Mohamed Jaafar had announced that he would not seek a re-election, paving the way for Kuala Krau MP Ismail Mohd Said to be the new division chief.
He added that incumbent Temerloh division chief Datuk Mohd Sarit Yusoh would also be making way for Lanchang assemblyman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin, who is also the state Umno information chief, to head the division.
“Kuantan and Rompin divisions will be the first to hold their delegates meeting followed by other divisions.
“Lipis and Temerloh will be the last to hold theirs on November 9,” he said. Abdul Rahim said since it was an election year, all division chiefs would open the meetings, followed by a contest in the division if any, and nomination for the top posts in Umno.
The Raub division would see a contest between incumbent Datuk Shahiruddin Abdul Moin and his deputy Datuk Mustaffar Kamal Abdul Hamid. Pulau Tawar assemblyman Datuk Dr Ahmad Shukri Ismail, who is the deputy division chief, will take on incumbent Datuk Seri Tengku Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar in the Jerantut division.
Another deputy division chief Abdul Rahman Mohamed would be challenging incumbent Datuk Mohd Soffi Abdul Razak for the Lipis division.
An interesting fight would be the one between Paya Besar division chief and incumbent Datuk Ahmad Tajuddin Sulaiman and Paya Besar MP Datuk Abdul Manan Ismail.
Ahmad Tajuddin had been vocal and had called for the resignations of all Umno supreme council members, including Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, and accept responsibility for the poor showing in the general election early this year.
He also tendered his resignation as the Pahang Umno secretary and had been a strong critic of the state government.
At Indera Mahkota, division vice chief Mohd Azmi Yusof will lock horns with incumbent Datuk Faisal Abdullah for the top post.
As for the Paya Besar and Jerantut divisions, the challengers were said to have received more nominations than the incumbents.
