High alert for HFMD at Sarawak hospitals

SIBU: Kuching, Sibu and Miri hospitals have made preparations to cope with an anticipated outbreak of the Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) this year.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said that warnings had been issued to the hospitals to be on high alert and set up isolation wards.

Speaking to reporters after attending a briefing on the disease at Sibu Hospital here recently, he said the state would get more IVIG vaccines from the Federal Government to ensure all hospitals were well stocked.

“We expect more children to be affected at the end of the year during the Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations.

“This is because people will get together for celebrations and the disease can spread quickly in crowded situations or public places,” he said. - Bernama
