MALAYSIA Tourism Executive Sdn Bhd (MATEX), organiser of the Penang Pesta Expo, is expected to spend RM200,000 on publicity for the event.
Penang Tourism Development, Culture, Arts and Heritage Commit-tee chairman Danny Law said the expenditure was part of the RM2mil allocation used to refurbish and renovate the venue in Sungai Nibong.
“Admission to the expo, which begins on Sept 25 for a period of 40 days, is free and the Pesta Expo this year will have a fresh look with a new concept,” he said in a press conference yesterday.
Themed ‘Asean Culture and Food Centre’, the expo will feature cultural performances with more than 300 food and handicraft kiosks from Asean countries including Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand.
Law said there would also be Thai boxing daily from Oct 1 and an exotic centre showing Anaconda and other animals where visitors would have to pay a nominal fee.
“We hope to turn the annual Pesta Expo into an international one-stop centre for the tourists to see products and cultural performances from Asean countries.
“Some 1,500 Star Cruise tourists will arrive at George Town every Monday and Tuesday for a day trip from 2pm to 8pm.
“We hope after their sight seeing, they will drop by the Pesta Expo which is tentatively set to operate from 3pm to 10pm to purchase some souvenirs,” he said.
On another matter, Law said there were 1,500 entries so far for the Penang Bridge International Marathon, which would start from Queensbay Mall on Nov 16.
“A multinational company will be sponsoring RM100,000 and we are giving away RM120,000 worth of prizes to the winners,” Law said, adding that the top three schools with the most entries would receive RM500, RM300 and RM200 respectively.
