Giving out scholarships in bid to produce top sportsmen

STUDENTS with solid sports background stand a good chance of obtaining government scholarships to pursue tertiary education.

Higher Education Ministry development and student affairs director Prof Dr Mohd Fauzi Ramlan said it was wrong for people to think that students with sports background would not receive scholarships like those who achieved academic excellence.

“Last year, the ministry gave out 75 sports scholarships to deserving students after vetting some 500 applications.

“This year, there is an allocation for 100 students with sports background.

“We will fully sponsor their studies with the hope of producing world-class sportsmen like Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan and Datuk Nicol David,” he said.

Dr Fauzi was speaking to reporters after launching the Northern Zone Sports Carnival for private higher educational institutions at AIMST University in Semeling, near Sungai Petani, recently.

Some 500 students from 11 universities, colleges and institutions from Kedah, Perlis, Penang and northern Perak participated in the two-day event. The games included volleyball, netball, badminton and futsal.

Dr Fauzi said the country would host the Asian University Games in December.
