THE Selangor contingent for the Sukma in Kuala Terengganu should be prepared for some surprise visits.
Batu Caves state assemblyman Amirudin Shari, who has been appointed as the chef de mission to the Selangor contingent, would be visiting the respective teams' training venues.
I will be visiting them unannounced. I want them to concentrate on their training programmes which is more important than welcoming me. I want to just observe their training sessions and also get feedback on their progress.
If they face any problems, they are free to discuss with me,'' said Amirudin, who is also the Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) deputy chairman.
Amirudin had already visited the wushu, bowling and boxing training sessions. He came back impressed with the athletes.
They were not aware of my visit. I was happy with their commitment,'' he added.
As the chef de mission, Amirudin has a big task to maintain Selangor's dominance in the Sukma. Selangor had been the overall champions in the Sukma for the past six Games.
At the last Games in Alor Star, Selangor bagged 53 gold, 44 silver and 56 bronze medals and accumulated 629 points. The MSNS also paid out RM762,750 as incentives to the medal winners.
This year, Selangor will be taking part in 31 sports weightlifting, badminton, netball, volleyball and beach volleyball, football, lawn bowls, equestrian, gymnastics, golf, hockey, karate, rowing, fencing, cycling, archery, shooting, athletics, silat, petanque, table tennis, rugby, aquatics, sepak takraw, squash, sailing, taekwondo, tennis, bowling, boxing and wushu and they have set a target of 61 gold medals.
Amirudin said the MSNS, helmed by executive director Mohamed Zubir Idrus, had started preparations for Sukma about one and half years ago.
He has also briefed me on the teams preparations. We are not only preparing the athletes for this year's Sukma but also identified athletes for the 2010 Sukma in Malacca. They will be taking part in Kuala Terengganu to gain exposure,'' said Amirudin.
