SIBU: A congregation of 130,000 Muslims is expected at the town square here on March 20 for the state-level Prophet Muhammad’s birthday celebrations.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s office Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said the congregation would take part in a 3.2km procession along major roads in this third-biggest city of Sarawak.

He said Yang Dipertua Negri Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng and Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and their wives would be the guests of honour participating in the procession.

He said it was the first time in 10 years that Sibu was hosting a major religious event organised by the Sarawak Islamic Affairs Department and Sibu Division Resident’s Office.

A thanksgiving ceremony will be held at An Nur Mosque a day earlier.

Daud said various activities would be held during the two-week celebration from March 15.

He invited non-Muslims to take part in the procession to display Malaysian solidarity, although it was an Islamic religious event.

“ I hope Sibu residents will bear with us as most major roads will be closed to traffic from 6am to 12.30pm on that day,” he added. – Bernama
