ALOR STAR: Kedah Barisan Nasional is fielding a 'millennium' team comprising 30% fresh faces in the coming general election.
Its chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said: ”Politicians are like singers. They can come from any background as long as they can perform.
“We can have doctors and graduates as candidates. But the most important aspect is the brain.
“Politicians who aspire to hold posts in Kedah must be able to help formulate strategies to bring about progress to Kedah and its people,” he said after presenting fishing tools worth RM650,000 to 450 needy Kuala Kedah fishermen yesterday.
Mahdzir said two state assemblymen had expressed their wish to step down to make way for new faces.
Refusing to disclose their names, Mahdzir likened them to millennium politicians who acted in the interest of the Barisan.
Kedah MCA chairman Datuk Paduka Beh Heng Siong, who is also Gurun assemblyman, had announced his wish to retire from politics several months ago.
Mahdzir hinted that the other assemblyman had served three terms.
Earlier in his speech, Mahdzir said the government had been helping the needy regardless of their racial background, religious beliefs and political affiliation.
”We will continue with our struggle to help the people improve their livelihood. We have implemented various programmes to help the poor out of the poverty cycle,” he said.
